Dr Cherry Chan from the English Across the Curriculum (EAC) project team conducted a research writing workshop for nearly 40 first-year students from the two-year Early Childhood Education Programme (CHED) to equip them with research proposal writing skills. The workshop aimed to (1) introduce effective thesis writing strategies; (2) note the overall structure and content of a research proposal as well as function and language of different sections; and (3) practice research writing skills. Due to the current development of the COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop was conducted online via Zoom.
The post-workshop survey results show that the workshop was well-received. Students found the writing and language tips helpful for their preparation of the research proposal. They particularly appreciated the design of the in-class activities which allowed them to practice their research writing skills and enhanced their participation in the workshop. The instructor’s clear explanation of important concepts was also applauded. The EAC team is greatly encouraged by the positive feedback and looks forward to continuing the provision of language enhancement support to CHED students.
