Workshop on Writing the Literature Review for the Urban Studies Programme (URSP)

Mr Matthew Knowles joined Prof Murat Es to conduct a two-hour joint writing workshop for the students in URSP4001/4002 Capstone Thesis I/II on 19 September 2019. This is the fourth writing workshop held by the EAC team within the same course in the Urban Studies Programme.

The workshop familiarized students to the key features and tactics of writing an effective literature review for their final year capstone thesis. Topics covered included the rhetorical moves of early, mid and late stages of a literature review. The key functions, elements and structure of a literature review were also highlighted. Corpora and other language tools were introduced to guide appropriate language and collocation use. To further facilitate students’ understanding, a plethora of online resources was shared throughout the workshop.

According to the feedback collected from the students, the workshop was very helpful and well-received. The students enjoyed the interactive activities and hands-on approach to the tasks and were especially appreciative of the comprehensive exercise booklet designed by the EAC team. The EAC team is pleased with the positive results and will look forward to delivering more workshops in collaboration with the Urban Studies Programme.
