A workshop on research writing strategies was jointly conducted by Dr Jose Lai and Dr Allen Ho from ELTU on 23 September 2019. The workshop participants are students who took SPED3630 Introduction to Research Methods in Term 2 of the 2018–2019 academic year and are currently in their final year of study preparing for the research report of their final-year project.
The objectives of the two-hour workshop include (1) to provide feedback on SPED3630 research proposals; (2) to introduce effective thesis writing strategies; (3) to note the overall structure of a thesis, and function & language of different sections; and (4) to highlight the differences between research proposals and final reports. Online quizzes and in-class activities were designed to enhance the interaction between instructors and students.
The feedback survey results indicate that the workshop was well-received. Students expressed that they enjoyed the interactive games during the workshop. They also acquired knowledge on various language points, including the use of correct word forms and word collocation, as well as the proper structure of a research proposal. The EAC team is pleased with the positive response from students and looks forward to offering further language support in the coming Term 2.
