“English through Health Sciences” is a second-year course designed for students in Public Health, Community Health Practice, and Gerontology at the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine, within the Bachelor of Science programme. This course aims to strengthen students’ written and spoken communication in unpacking and disseminating health sciences, healthcare, and specialist knowledge, for instance, health promotion and disease prevention, to a general audience.
There are three parts to the course: a writing component, a speaking component, and a specialist vocabulary component. Coursework will consist of:
A writing assignment (pair work) based on students’ choice of submitting either a research-based project, a grant proposal, or a health pamphlet in the form of a booklet
A seminar presentation (pair work) based on the writing assignment chosen
Two in-class specialist vocabulary quizzes
