This course aims to lay the comprehensive English language foundation needed for university studies by engaging students in multi-modal learning activities. In particular, students are guided to plan and complete an argumentative problem-solution essay and deliver corresponding presentations using research, writing and speaking skills acquired in the course. Learning topics include: identifying features of academic writing, distinguishing and presenting arguments, conducting academic research, documenting sources, paraphrasing and summarising, structuring presentations, and enhancing verbal and non-verbal delivery skills. Course-tied workshops will be provided in support of students’ learning. This course is compulsory for first-year students, except for those who have attained HKDSE English level 5 or above or its equivalence.
