The English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has strived to develop and enhance students’ English language communication abilities, especially in academic, professional and social contexts.
Our mission to offer high quality English language teaching and learning experiences to students is achieved by both our formal and non-formal provisions. Formally, we have a comprehensive English language curriculum comprising nearly 50 courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and English for Professional Purposes (EPP), spanning three academic years. To address learner diversity, we have purposefully launched an English Across the Curriculum (EAC) Project, in which we collaborate closely with content teachers from various disciplines to provide customized English language support to students. We have also provided other non-formal English learning opportunities, including a Peer Tutoring Scheme, as well as a wide variety of workshops, social activities and contests.
In the years to come, we will capitalize on our solid foundation to further enrich our formal and non-formal provisions to provide students with substantial and meaningful learning experiences that will contribute to CUHK’s development themes on “providing student experience that widens their horizons”, “fostering global engagement” and “fulfilling social responsibility” in particular. With the growing prevalence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI), we shall endeavour to implement a discreet AI policy that will not compromise students’ authentic language learning and language use opportunities.
With collective effort both from within and beyond, it is strongly believed that students will be well prepared for challenges academically, professionally, as well as socially.
