Sample Pitch Script

Hello, ladies and gentlemen, my name is Johnson Chan, and I'm a lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Today I want to share with you something that would change our university lives for the better. I want to solve the problem of hunger in our campus.

Let me share a story with you. Last February, I was stuck on campus correcting papers. I wanted to get the work done so that I can enjoy my short vacation break during Chinese New Year. It was especially cold that evening, and at seven o'clock, I desperately needed something to energize me. A warm bowl of rice would be nice. But, as you might know, the canteen and restaurants near the Administration Building were already closed. I tried to whip out my mobile phone to find some apps that would deliver some warm food, but no delivery service was available. There was food nearby - at the Maxim's restaurant near the MTR station - but to go down, eat and then come back up would take an extra hour. I was not ready to do that. Yet, without anyone who was willing to deliver the food for me, I went on marking in deep hunger. It was a memorable night because I thought, surely there must be a better way to get food on campus.

Sounds familiar? Well, I have come to solve that problem.

Introducing the CUD service. CUD stands for Chinese University Delivery. CUD works as it suggests: it delivers, specifically, food. What happens is this: when you feel hungry, you simply go into the CUHK App. Click “Order Food”, and the app will show you a campus map of all the restaurants and canteens available. More importantly, it will also show the number of active “deliverers”: CUHK students who are available to deliver the food at a fee. Once you order, both the restaurant and the student will receive notification. The student will pick up the order from the restaurant, and deliver the order to you directly. You can wait in your office or dorm room and do your work while the delivery is being performed by someone else.

So, who does this benefit?

1. First, you! You get to have food at the convenience of your own room, and you get to save time!

2. CUHK Restaurants: with more deliveries, there will be incentives for these restaurants to provide more innovative and tasty products.

3. CUHK students: don't we all want to make an extra buck? For many students, since they are on their way to their dorm or classroom anyway, they might as well have some extra pocket money.

4. CUHK: not only does the university receive more traffic in their app, they can also better serve the university community, increasing students and staff members' sense of belonging and satisfaction with the university.

How would this be implemented?

The university will pay for the initial app development fee of about HKD$600,000. The app will then be integrated into CUHK's own app. When the app is completed, it will be implemented campus wide. Delivery fee would be around $15-20, and multiple orders can be accepted. From order to delivery, the process is expected to take about 20-30 mins, as deliverers will utilize the campus bus system. Like Uber or other taxi apps, the deliverer's performance can be rated, and there will be a dedicated online method to resolve conflict. A student who does 3 deliveries a day can earn up to $1,500 a month.

So what are you waiting for? Support the creation of the CUD app, and have your food delivered to your door right away!
