Director’s Message

“Building on the substantive development and performance of the past years, the new academic year is going to be an even greater year of achievement and consolidation.”

Welcome to the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) website! I hope this will give you a comprehensive understanding of our role at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The ELTU serves to develop and enhance students’ English language proficiency, both in general usage as well as in the academic disciplines.

Our mission is to provide top quality language teaching and learning experiences for students. The English language curriculum at CUHK has been designed to reflect a 3-3-2 language development model over the four-year normative curriculum and is kept abreast of the latest language education developments around the world. The three-year, 8-credit, 3-3-2 model covers English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and English for Professional Purposes (EPP). To cater for learner diversity, topic-based elective courses are in place, and an English Across the Curriculum (EAC) project is launched to enhance disciplinary literacy by collaborating with subject professors.

In addition to the formal curriculum, students benefit from a wide array of out-of-class learning opportunities such as studying independently through supplemental online resources, accessing information posts on the ELTU Facebook Page, and participating in the Peer Tutoring Scheme, interactive workshops, social events, and student-led activities.

Building on the substantive development and performance of the past years, the new academic year is going to be an even greater year of achievement and consolidation. The Unit will develop more alternative and elective courses to further enrich our curriculum and customize the English learning experience. With additional resources obtained for the EAC project, the Unit is in a good position to further enhance cross-collaboration efforts with other departments in order to provide quality language teaching tailored to students’ own disciplines.

I believe these are some exciting developments in the Unit, and I invite you to explore our website to learn more about the passion and ambition of our teaching team who are experienced and dedicated professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Best regards,
